Migration Agent fails to install - File contains a virus or potentially unwanted software (0x800700E1)
Learn how to successfully install the migration agent when Windows Defender blocks the install

Problem
You see the following error message appear in the application event log while trying to install the migration agent on a workstation.

System.BadImageFormatException: Operation did not complete successfully because the file contains a virus or potentially unwanted software. (0x800700E1)
This error indicates that either Windows Defender or another EDR solution or Application Whitelisting solution is preventing the Migration Agent from installing.
Resolution
If you are using a centralized EDR (Crowdstrike, SentinelOne, etc) please have your security administrators review the EDR portal and determine what is being blocked.
If you are only using Windows Defender, you can resolve the issue by whitelisting the PowerSyncPro Migration Agent Directory.
- From the start menu search for “Windows Security”.

- Navigate to “Virus & threat Protection”.
- Then find “Virus & threat protection settings” and select “Manage Settings”.

- Scroll to the bottom and to find “Exclusions”.
- Select “Add or remove exclusions”.

- Select “Add an exclusion”.
- then select “Folder”.

- Then find the directory C:\Program Files\Declaration Software\PSP MA\

Attempt to restart the PowerSyncPro Migration Agent service, it should run successfully and register against the server.
